Although bikini fashion has always ruled the beach, there was a time 20 years ago when longaccentuated butts, and side boobs were all the rage -- they ruled the hot sand and blazing sun. Neon colors used in bikini prints were as abundant as the lights used to power the Las Vegas strip. This happened at a time when nothing was hotter than photographs of babes in bikinis driving red Ferrari's in the Hollywood hills. Digital photography didn't exist, airbrushing was a soft focus lens during Playboy centerfold shoots, and breasts were: natural, full, and plump. Here is a look at why we love the long butts and side-boob.

The Line Up

In the 80s bikini contests were breaking out all over the coast. Be it the East or West, you couldn't escape them. Venice Beach, CA was especially a leader and advocate of the long butt look. If it wasn't happening in Venice Beach, then it wasn't fashionable. The hottest bikini fashions came out of Venice Beach where they had the hottest women to 'sport the neon' out of those swimsuits.

Pretty In Pink

People who lived inland from the beach needed their weekend dose of bikini bliss as well. This caused bikini contests to become part of race car driving, drag racing, and pretty much anything that involved fast cars, and even faster women. The roar of the cars only calmed down for maybe a few minutes a day, which oddly enough coincided with the bikini contestants being brought out onto the drag strip.

Queen Of The Beach

Bikini contests were often paired with the arrival of the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball tournaments which descended upon California beaches during the Summer months. Only in a time of the long butt could one hope to get this big of a turnout, and crown the next "Queen" of the beach.

Behind The Scenes

In the glory days, long butt contestants needed even more time to get ready for contests than modern day contestants. Those who were around in the 80s know first hand why Hippies are still so mad today: these beauty queens used enough hairspray to punch a small hole in the ozone layer. Hammering the environment with deadly chemicals for hours on end would piss tons of people off, but the hippies have to admit, those girls looked damned fine doing it.

Cut Off Jean Shorts

Cut off jean shorts, or "daisy dukes", have held a special place in the American lexicon for decades. When the weather finally heated up for the Summer, women couldn't be bothered to go and buy a new pair of shorts. They just threw their old jeans right down on the bed, pulled out the scissors, started cutting; and we have been thanking them in our thoughts ever since.

Zuma Beach, Malibu

California beaches were a mecca when it came to showing off the newest long butt and side boob fashions. Images from the beach soon found their way into surfing magazines, and almost immediately onto the walls of adolescent boys bedroom's around the world.

Pink Graffiti

Whoever the artist was who did the graffiti behind the scenes of this beach bunny bonanza was exactly right; "Krazzy" sums up the girls who are about to go onstage and strut their stuff. The girls are fully decked out in hot pink suits, scrunchies, and just the right amount of side-boob -- the way the crowd likes it.

On Deck

Being a security guard at a beach bikini contest is a thankless job, but it does have some major benefits. When the guy on the right informed his high school guidance counselor his plans for the future, they couldn't figure out his reasoning. Then they saw this picture, and asked if he could hook them up with a weekend job.

White And Red

The triangle bikini top become excessively popular during the 80s. Many companies took to the beaches with models sporting bathing suits with their logo emblazoned across them. It was a great way to achieve recognition on the sands, and was appreciated by all in attendance.

Swedish Bikini Team

Men who lived the life in the 80s were quite familiar with the Swedish Bikini Team. The team was a group of American female models who appeared in an advertising campaign for Old Milwaukee beer. The idea played off the American stereotype that Scandinavian women were blond, had ginormous breasts, and liked to party. The commercials showed a group of men who hung out with each other appearing to be bored to death; that is until the Swedish Bikini Team came and rescued them from boredom with Old Milwaukee Beer.
